First of all, search engine traffic is a continuously moving target. Once you've implemented the ideas below, your site won't be finished. No single tip is a holy grail or perfect solution. Instead you should look at them all in conjunction with an overall Search Engine Marketing approach to build traffic. Search engine traffic is always changing and evolving.
Yes, there are more than just 10 things you should do. Your site will need to adapt, adjust & advance regularly to some degree. But these are 10 initial ways to help search traffic within your site:
10. Meta Tags An often over looked, old-school way to benefit your search results is by adding relevant keywords to your meta tag descriptions within your site code. If you have a DotNetNuke content managed site, you can use modules such as Script Injector to add these items to your site's HTML Header areas. But this is not the holy grail!
9. File Names In your site's file names, be sure to use hyphens (–) instead of an underscore (_), especially with site images. Feel free to load your image file names with lots of keywords that are relevant to your business & each specific page. For example, instead of logo.gif, you could choose a file name like: goode-design-graphic-design-web-development-web-design-brochure-design-logo.gif to add these keywords to your site's code. Each time Google and other search engines read the file name, they read each word as a series of keywords related to the site's topic.
8. Build a blog Go to one of the many outside blog building sites and start writing a blog about your business. Use this as an arena where you briefly (a couple of paragraphs) discuss one of your company's products or services. You could even gussy it up by adding a custom made graphic, icon or photo. Take a few minutes each day or week to write a couple of paragraphs detailing a benefit or feature of your company, web site, product or service to create a small, but growing search engine magnet. Be sure to put a link in the text to the specific web site page on your site that relates to the topic. Now you've just created your first incoming link!
7. Contribute to Industry Forums Now, we're not talking about spamming or trolling. We're talking about adding real, relevant & useful content to a forum environment. Let's say you join a public forum where they are discussing Page Layout or Brochure Creation... As you read through the forum, you should look for questions where another member is seeking advice, information or consultation. Take a moment to write out a good answer to the question that genuinely answers the issue. Within your text, you may want to post a link to your blog or possibly your company's site within the answer to offer more information on the topic. Additionally, you are able to add links into a signature element within these forums.
6. Content Managed Sites Here's one of our hot buttons. We always recommend a content managed site. This allows you and your staff to conveniently add pages, text & files that fit search engine criteria for good results. You may want to utilize a company like Goode Design to offer consultation by which you are able to adjust & hone your site content. In the end, your DotNetNuke Content Managed Site will offer you the ability and agility to change your site and adapt to your audience and market.
5. Downloadable PDF Brochures Do you have any print brochures that are sitting in a closet collecting dust? We know that it's important to have printed materials, but you can get double your money on simply converting your Brochure files into search engine readable PDF documents. You can either call the company that produced your brochures and ask them to create a web ready PDF or have them send the files to Goode Design and we'll take care of the compression, reduction & creation of a downloadable PDF document. Since PDF's are readable by google and other search engines, it's a great way to generate additional content from pre-existing marketing materials.
4. Pre-Existing Marketing Materials to Web Pages Okay, it sounds like we're repeating ourselves... but we're not. How many emails do you generate to potential clients or customers? How much of that material is simply repeated ad infinitum to different people? How many volumes of text does your company write in some form that is the equivalent of marketing gold that could simply be re-purposed and re-posted to your web site to generate a broader search engine net? Well, take that material and generate a new web page on your content managed web site. Take that email and create a blog post or a forum post with links to your site. Take that post card or printed material and create new pages, articles & downloadable files with it. Talk about a great recycling program! Reuse this material on your site and generate more search engine traffic.
3. Add boring sections to your site We know that no one actually READS press releases & FAQ sections, but they can be loaded with great search engine keywords. Also, if your FAQ is actually populated with questions that your customers & clients are asking frequently (what a concept), chances are there are people searching for those answers online! What a great way to help your customers and clients while generating business and search engine traffic to your site!
2. Synonyms & Similar terms Be aware of what others outside of your industry call a product or service. If one person calls it an ID Card and another calls it a Name Badge, you should be aware that your site needs to cover it's bases well.
That said, there are other synonyms that people rarely think of in search engines: Location Synonyms! Example: Goode Design operates in the greater Charlotte, NC area. But there are millions of ways to say "Greater Charlotte." Be sure to list specific cities, towns, regions & location names within which you serve. We operate in the following cities & towns of North Carolina: Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Mooresville, Statesville, Troutman, Davidson, Mint Hill, Matthews, Monroe, Concord, Kanapolis, Salisbury, Lincolnton, Rock Hill & Gastonia. However, Charlotte has lots of "areas" within which we operate such as NoDa, NorthLake, Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, Carowinds & Downtown. We could also use industries known to the area that may generate specific traffic like Nascar, Hendrick Motorsports & Lowe's Motor Speedway! Well, you get the point. Synonyms isn't just words that mean the same thing!
1. TEXT, TEXT, TEXT! Goode search engine traffic boils down to one thing and one thing only: READABLE, RELIABLE & RELEVANT TEXT! With a goode content managed web site set up in DotNetNuke or Joomla, your company could begin managing the text of your site and generating more search engine hits. Goode Design will work with you to establish a base line read of how your site ranks on various search terms & prescribe a series of text edits to increase search engine visibility. After we've worked with you to implement the text edits, meta tags & other items throughout your site, we will continue to monitor your site's progress and offer consultation to maintain & continue your search engine placement.
But we haven't even mentioned social media, link building, popularity building, Google AdWords, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera... |
